March 2016 Athlete of the Month: Brady Bird

bird

Congratulations to Brady Bird, Athlete of the Month for March 2016.  Do yourself a favor and take a look at Brady’s athlete profile.  You’ll be glad you did.

1. In general, what is your background?

I am a married white male. I have three children with my beautiful wife, whom I have dated since high school. She was way into me pretty much from the day she met me, so I decided that I would let her bear my children. I am originally from a small town in Michigan, went to high school in Indiana and college in Colorado. I grew up playing sports; specifically football, basketball and baseball. I never played soccer because I always made the football team. I once threw a 93 mile per hour changeup, probably.

2. Age, Occupation?

I am 38 years old and I am a Pisces. I am the President of S.I.C. Recycling, Inc. which you likely haven’t heard of, but trust me when I tell you that it is a really, really big deal.

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

I have been a paying member for about four years now and have actually been showing up for about the last two years. I first heard about Crossfit roughly 4 years ago while playing golf with a guy that spent four straight hours telling me about how he really liked this certain form of exercise called Crossfit. After largely ignoring him, and at the same time completely dominating him in golf, I decided to give Crossfit a shot myself. I have always played sports and have been called things like “athletic”, “handsome and athletic”, “athletically handsome and also mysteriously smart” … but I had never been referred to as “functionally fit” nor had anybody ever implied that I had “farm-boy strength”. I felt that Crossfit could help me combine my good looks, athleticism, street and book smarts with some serious, hard-core strength.

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

Honestly, I’m not sure if Crossfit changed me or if I changed Crossfit, but I am not here to rewrite this questionnaire. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Crossfit had been doing OK for itself before I started, Glassman had seemed to carve out a nice little niche for himself, but numbers are numbers and numbers don’t lie, so you tell me … do more people do Crossfit today or before I started? I’m not sure there is any way to really fact check because I don’t think Crossfit corporate is all that interested in self-promotion, but my gut tells me that it is more popular now than it was back then and my gut, while being chiseled, is also usually right.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.

One goal: run a 6:00 minute mile, squat more than Sierra, clean more than Brianne, continue to be better at basketball than Wes and convince Zach to brush his teeth before class.

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Favorite Crossfit moment has to be the time Scott and I lied about my score, said it was Rx and then spent the rest of the day listening to Flip question said score, along with questioning his mere existence. I mean, dude straight lost it. It was glorious.

7. What is your least favorite WOD to date?

Pretty sure I hated one of the Open wod’s where I couldn’t finish one of the movements, but you can’t move on to the next until you do, so then you spend something like 10 minutes just not accomplishing anything, all the while people are bouncing around back and forth all around you, accumulating reps and whatnot. Then, when it is all over, they ask how you did, but you both know damn well that they saw you struggling and know that you never moved from your first station. You get me right? I guess I can’t say that is my single least favorite WOD given that it has happened multiple times, but I am pretty sure you catch my drift.

8. What do you like most about Capital City CrossFit?

The people, dawg. Seriously, I love all of you f*ckers, with all due respect of course. The gym is filled with energy every day, we have great trainers and leadership, there are some very impressive athletes and the comedy is second to none. I look forward to coming in every day, although I rarely come in every day, but the days that I do come in, I really enjoy it because of the people. Also, the results speak for themselves, or else I wouldn’t be the Athlete of the Month.

9. Favorite movement?

I don’t take this question lightly. A person’s favorite movement should be one that embodies all that they stand for with regard to functional fitness. It should also be a movement that the athlete can actually accomplish, such as heavily-weighted ring muscle ups or something like that in my case. But if I were to boil it all down and only pick one, then I would have to go with banded hip thrusts; the contraction of the glutes, the explosion and pop of the hips, the well-timed grunt … all of those things are attributes of a well-rounded movement which exhibits one’s functional fitness while at the same time says “I like to party”.

10. Least favorite movement?

Has to be the snatch. I mean, what else is as demanding, difficult, impossible to comprehend and ever truly understand?
