Congratulations to Gary Barney on earning Athlete of the Month for January!  Gary has been at C3 for a little over a year now.  Since starting, Gary has lost about 45 pounds and is in the best shape of his adult life.  He turned 54 years old on New Years Day, and as Gary put it, it’s the first year he hasn’t “felt older.”  Gary has achieved this new fitness through consistency and hard work. He continues to push himself to be a better athlete. He is getting stronger week to week, and he is putting in the work to become competent in the more advanced gymnastics movements such as Pull-ups, Toes-2-Bar, and Handstand Push-ups.  Gary will also be competing in his first CrossFit competition with his workout buddy Michael Ismael at the 2017 IceBreather held at Capital City CrossFit. Congratulations Gary!
1. In general, what is your background?

Grew up in a small town in Kansas.  I am one of 10 kids of a family very involved in sports.  Attended Ottawa University , graduated with degree in Business Management and played football earning honorable mention my senior year for the position of Tight End.   Married to Wendy Barney, live in Riverton and dad to Justin, Brandon and Jordan. I have two grandchildren Noah and Kolton.

2.Age, Occupation?

I am 54 years old and currently a property manager for Target.  Previously I spent 30 years in truck and equipment rental management.

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

I learned about CrossFit through watching my son Jordan Barney get involved and compete.  Then watched my other two sons start up and thought I would like to do this. I started CrossFit to achieve the goal I have had the last few years since I got into my 50’s. That goal was to get into the best shape I have been in since college.  Outside of my knee problems I feel I am very close.

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

I am in a lot better shape, I have more energy and less stress.  I have lost right at 45lbs since I started,  I didn’t really change what I eat I just eat less of it and have stopped drinking Soda.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.

One goal I had was to compete in a competition and I am signed up for the Ice Breather with Michael Ishmael, wish us luck. Personal record would be to do 300# on back squat and 225# on squat clean.

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

When I  learned how to do kipping pull-ups.

7. What is your least favorite WOD to date?

I don’t know that I have a least favorite.  I just come and do my best to complete all WOD’s no matter what it is.

8. What do you like most about Capital City CrossFit?

I like the fact that no matter what level you are, you still get the same support from coaches and members.

9. Favorite movement?

Crazy as it sounds, I like doing pull-ups.

10. Least favorite movement?

Probably Kettlebells.
