March 2021 Athlete of the Month – Angie deMarco

Congratulations to Angie deMarco – our March Athlete of the Month!  Angie has been at C3 for 5+ years now.  In that time, we have seen Angie’s health and confidence elevate significantly.  A long time 5am-er, Angie gets her work done early and often!  She has been very consistent since starting at Capital City CrossFit, and she has really been dialing it in the last few months in particular.  Angie continues to push herself out of her comfort zone, and for that she is seeing considerable improvement in her abilities.  It is no uncommon to see Angie’s name on the Masters RX Leaderboard on SugarWOD.  A few years ago, Angie may have been content with scaling some things, but now when she sees an opportunity to do the work as prescribed, she takes it!  It is great to see Angie’s fitness continue to improve.  She is one the the hardest workers in the gym, and very well deserving of the title Athlete of the Month!  Congratulations Angie – keep up the hard work!

In general, what is your background?

I’ve lived in Springfield all of my life.  I attended Sacred Heart Academy and LLCC.  Joe and I have been married 41 years (longer than most of you have been alive!) and have 5 great kids and 6 even greater grandkids.  (My family photo is out of date – missing the two newest grandsons.)

Age, Occupation?

I’m 61 years old and Compliance Specialist for Prairie Cardiovascular Consultants.  Our department handles all HIPAA, OSHA and Risk Management training/issues for the practice.

How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

I was doing a kick boxing class and the “Fit Club wander around” as I call it.  I had worked with a personal trainer and he gave me some good ideas regarding workouts but I didn’t feel I got any better at any of them.  My wonderful daughter-in-law Katie (whom a lot of you know from C3) told me about C3.  I attended the on-ramp class and was hooked.  I do need to mention that Katie NEVER mentioned running was involved.  When we did the “fitness test” or whatever it is called during on-ramp and Jamie said we were running I’m sure I had a look of pure panic on my face.  Jamie was so nice and “run/walked” with me during that first 400 meter run and told me I would get better.  I still don’t believe him.  I smile every time Brian says “go for an easy 400”.  I only have one speed so it doesn’t matter if he says easy run, slow jog or full out run – it’s all the same.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

CrossFit changed the way I feel about myself.  I have confidence that I CAN do things I never would have attempted on my own.

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.

I have several but one of my goals is to be able to do pull-ups without the band.  Now that I have actually written this goal down I need to make it happen.

Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

During Open 20.4 I cleaned 93 pounds 5 times but could NOT get it over my head.  Last month I push jerked 100.5 which to most people isn’t a lot of weight but this was a proud moment for me.

What is your least favorite WOD to date?

Any WOD with more than one round of running.

What do you like most about Capital City CrossFit?

I like the people at C3.  My 5:00 a.m. class has some of the most talented athletes who push me every day to do my best.  Everyone is so supportive.  I also love the fact I just show up and Brian has already planned what the workout is for the day.  I don’t have to “wander around” wondering what I’m going to do.  I definitely don’t like all of the workouts but I know I wouldn’t have done most of them on my own.

Favorite exercise?

Pretty much anything with a barbell but power cleans and deadlifts are probably my favorite.

Least favorite exercise?

I used to think it was running and burpees but I’ve decided its burpee box jump-overs.  The combination just kills me.
