December 2021 Athlete of the Month – Daton Kaisner

Congratulations to Daton Kaisner – our December Athlete of the Month! Daton has been a member of Capital City CrossFit for four years. Over that time, Daton has seen a lot of growth as an athlete. Coming from an active, endurance background, Daton found CrossFit to be a new kind of challenge. Over his time at C3, his hard work and dedication has led to some significant strength and conditioning gains. Daton continues to get stronger in his lifts while also honing his gymnastic skills. Daton has had to work around a couple of minor injuries, which he has done so in an intelligent fashion – finding modifications and substitutions when needed in order to stay moving. In addition to being a stud athlete, Daton has been an exemplary member of the C3 community. He brings a positive vibe to each class he attends, and is always first to lend a helping hand for competitions or events. Daton has been privileged to be able to work out with his three children, Ian, Gracie, and Elliot over the course of his CrossFit journey. He has without a doubt inspired them to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. Congratulations Daton on the well deserved honor!

In general, what is your background?

I went to St. Joseph-Ogden High School and then to ISU to major in Construction Management.  I’ve always enjoyed sports, working out and exercise in general.  In high school I played football, wrestled and ran track.  I was in the Illinois Army National Guard for 6 years.  I married Sarah Preckwinkle (yes, Jim’s sister) 20 years ago and we have 3 kids.  You may know them.  Ha.  Ian, Gracie & Elliot.

Age, Occupation?

I’m a balding 45 year old; I gave up on my hair but not my fitness.  I starting working for State Farm Insurance in their Facilities Management Department out of school and after a few years transitioned to the product management side of the company.  After a few more years I learned Agency is where all the fun is so I took the plunge and became a State Farm Agent in Springfield in 2008.

How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

Jim Preckwinkle always talked very highly of Crossfit and the C3 community so I knew it was out there but wasn’t that interested.  I was running and biking a lot and didn’t have time for much else.  However, after a couple running injuries I learned I didn’t have good core strength and just balance of exercise in general.  I was ready for a change.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

CrossFit has helped me in so many ways.  After a few months at C3 my clothes started fitting a little better.  My muscles started to waken up and feel energized.  I always liked cardio workouts but now I was stronger and that was fun.  After 3-4 years at C3, I learned I’m not 25 anymore and have to listen to my body more closely.  I’ve recently recovered from a couple injuries and I think I’m smarter and better for it.

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.

I don’t have a movement goal or a strength or rep goal.  I would just like to maintain consistent physical health so I’m able to enjoy life.  I want to be able to CrossFit with my grandkids someday.

Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Summer Knights Showdown comp with Ian and Jim.  This was very early on and was a big boost for moral …and was a ton of fun.

What is your least favorite WOD to date?

Pretty much any WOD with Dubs.

What do you like most about Capital City CrossFit?

The community, the people, the culture…we all say that and it’s true.  I’ll add that I absolute love and is the highlight of my day to workout with my kids.  To see my boys grow and develop with CrossFit and have the leadership of C3 in their lives is amazing.

Favorite exercise?

Toes to Bar.  I know it’s a weird one but the swinging motion is fun and the core workout is amazing.

Least favorite exercise?

Dubs
