Congratulations to C3 Athlete of the Month for June, Kristen Fernstaedt! Kirsten has been at C3 for a year and half. She has been a consistent, hard working member of our community since she fist started. Kristen is not afraid to challenge herself, and she doesn’t shy away from anything outside of her comfort zone. She is always willing to try and because of that she is always improving as an athlete. Kristen competed in her first partner competition in October of last year, placing third in the Festivus Games Novice division. She is also participating in the Row Raiser and competing in the Summer Knight’s Team Competition later this Summer! Her positive, up-beat attitude and willingness to encourage others makes Kristen a shining star in the C3 Community.
Congratulations again to Kristen. Check out her Athlete of the Month profile below!
1. In general, what is your background?
- I was born and raised in East Peoria, IL. I moved to Springfield in 2003 for work, where I met my husband, Phil. I have one son, Matthew whose 11 years old, one step-son Michael 19, one step-daughter Lauren 21, and one step-granddaughter Kingsley 8 months! I love and play a lot of slow pitch softball!
2. Age, Occupation?
- I just turned 37 on June 1st! I actually have two jobs.. I’m an International Project Manager for Werner Global Logistics, in short I export goods for businesses. Also, as many of you know, my husband and I own Freestyle Apparel & Design. We bought this existing business in January 2016 and have really “enjoyed” owning our own business.
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
- Isaiah Brown, Mike Brown’s son worked for us when we took over Freestyle and he was a trainer for another CF gym. He would talk about CrossFit all day long at work! I was scanning through Facebook one night and found this ad showing C3 was hosting an all women 6 week challenge and decided to sign up for it!
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
- I feel stronger, both physically and mentally. We have tried many workout programs, both at home and just going to the gym. I needed the structure and accountability that CrossFit provides to actually see my fitness growth. As far as lifestyle changes, my husband and I started on the Keto diet 5 weeks ago and have seen tremendous changes. The first couple weeks were difficult as far as finding energy during my workouts but now I feel amazing.
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.
- There are so many… unassisted pull-ups and toes-to-bar are my current goals.
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
- AshRo and I competed in a Team competition at Festivus Games last year and took 3rd place at our first ever competition!
7. What is your least favorite WOD to date?
- Any workout with running…
8. What do you like most about Capital City CrossFit?
- Most definitely the community, from the coaches to the members, everyone encourages you. Their positivity and drive is what pushes me out of my comfort zone and I see the best results from the workouts. I absolutely love the environment, and the friends I’ve met since joining C3!
9. Favorite exercise?
- Back squats and any Partner WOD with my girl Jenna!!
10. Least favorite exercise?
- Running..
